Chesapeake Bay
Wetlands & Water Quality Ecotour

The Chesapeake Bay: Living Shores & Wetlands Ecotour is a guided journey into the heart of one of North America’s most ecologically important estuaries. Beginning at the dock, guests are welcomed by their WOCO Ecotour Guide and licensed boat captain, who provide a safety briefing and a short introduction to the Bay’s geography, history, and ecological significance.

The tour first explores the Bay’s tidal marshes and shoreline edges, where marsh plants stabilize the soil, filter pollutants, and serve as nurseries for countless aquatic species. As you glide past lush vegetation, you may see herons hunting in the shallows, ospreys circling overhead, and migratory birds passing along the Atlantic Flyway. Your guide will explain how these wetlands serve as a natural buffer against storms and sea-level rise, making them vital to the Bay’s resilience.

A key highlight is visiting an oyster reef restoration site. Oysters, far from being just a seafood delicacy, are powerful ecosystem engineers that filter the water, improve clarity, and create habitat for fish, crabs, and other aquatic life. You will learn how reefs are built, the science behind their success, and the role of community-driven conservation in restoring oyster populations and improving Bay health.

This is an interactive ecotour—you won’t just watch, you’ll participate. Using professional field tools, guests help measure water quality indicators such as turbidity, pH, temperature, and salinity. These measurements offer a hands-on way to understand the Bay’s ecological condition and how scientists monitor changes over time.

Wildlife observation continues throughout the tour. You may spot native fish, blue crabs, aquatic invertebrates, and submerged plant species, with your guide explaining their role in the Bay’s food web and how environmental shifts affect the entire system.

The day closes with a mindful moment on the water. Anchored in a calm stretch of the Bay, guests are invited to slow down with guided breathwork, journaling, or silent observation—allowing for reflection on the beauty and interconnectedness of this remarkable ecosystem.
